Year of the Rooster

By Ting Foon Chick

Cock-a-doodle-do! What will the year of the Rooster bring for you? On January 27th 2017 there’s a big celebration for Chinese New Year. The Rooster struts in as the ruler for the next twelve months in the Chinese calendar. A night before a new moon will give the perfect backdrop for fireworks to light up the skies in the far east. The lunar Chinese New Year begins on January 28th 2017 and people all over the world will wake up in the year of the Rooster. Or will they? Even though millions of people would have exchanged good wishes for a Happy and Prosperous New Year, astrologers will greet the solar year of the Rooster on February 4th. The Monkey will still be the year ruler in charge for any babies born between January 28th and February 4th 2017. Why? The Chinese calendar tracks both the cycles of the moon and the cycles of the sun. Over the centuries, folks in the Middle Kingdom that’s the literal translation of China,(pronounced Zhōngguó in mandarin) would observe the moon in the night sky and keep track of the months. The second new moon after the Winter Solstice is the time to celebrate the new year.

The Chinese solar calendar tracks the solstices, equinoxes, rather like many other civilisations, plus there are solar months. Each lunar month starts with a new moon and the full moon is in the middle of the month. It’s easy for everyday people to look up into the sky at night and see straight away the phase of the moon, so the lunar calendar was used in day to day life. At the same time, the solar calendar is happily ticking along with the solar months, solstices and equinoxes, so the Chinese luni-solar calendar integrates both the sun and the moon. Astrologers, whether they were in the court of the Emperor, or at the local temple or market serving everyday folks would plot Four Pillars birth charts (aka Ba Zi) using the solar calendar.

Traditionally, at the start of a new year, Chinese people would consult an astrologer about the year ahead. Questions about wealth, career, health, relationships and children would be handled in the Four Pillars reading by the astrologer. If you’re not in the company of an experienced astrologer who can interpret your chart, you can still get your own intelligent life reading from Chinese Destiny Stars Astrology app.

The Rooster ruling 2017 is a particular type of Rooster: it’s a Fire Rooster. There are twelve animals in the Chinese Zodiac. Each animal takes it turn to rule for a year in the cycle. The previous Rooster year was twelve years ago, in 2005. There are five different types of Rooster year: Fire Rooster, Earth Rooster, Metal Rooster, Water Rooster, Wood Rooster. 2017 is a Fire Rooster year, and the previous Fire Rooster ruled 1957, sixty years ago. A sixtieth birthday celebration is considered rather special for Chinese people because they have walked a full cycle of the sixty combinations of elements with animal signs.

The ruling Rooster occupies space as well as time. Maybe ancient Chinese civilisation had a grasp of the universe without the science of today? During 2017, the Rooster approaches your home from the west. It’s not a good idea to disturb the year ruler for it can bring out the sharpness of the metallic nature of the Rooster. Outside, avoid digging and disturbing the earth in the west location (255° to 285°). Similarly, avoid disturbing the energies in the east with renovations or major digging outside. If you sit facing west, the Rooster ruling the year might wonder why you are being confrontational. Since it is a clever thing not to annoy the year ruler, consider sitting with your back to the west so that you have the year ruler protecting your back. You want to have the support of the sharp thinking Rooster right behind you. During a Rooster year, it is also a good idea not to disturb the south sector. Again, avoid digging and construction work in the south.

The Rooster is a meticulous creature and a good way to create an atmosphere to welcome in the Rooster and get the Chinese New Year off to a fantastic start is to do spring cleaning during January, at the tail of Monkey year. Here are some easy general Feng Shui Tips you can apply for Rooster year:

• Keep the south sector of your home clutter free. Add some beautiful ornaments which are curved and have a golden shiny metallic finish. A gold bowl could be particularly attractive.

• In the south-east sector, add something in a black colour, ideally in a wavy shape.

• In the east, add a red ornament. The annual energies from the east can support happiness.

• Is romance on your mind? Place some fresh flowers in a beautiful vase with clean water to help you attract admirers. The energies in the north-east can be directed towards success in studies if you place water bamboo rather than flowers.

• In the north add something curved with a golden shiny metallic finish. A gold bowl or gold metal would be rather splendid since the energies coming from the north-east this year can help you with career progression.

• If you’re interested in career success, you want to be in optimal health. Place an opened calabash gourd in the north-west during this year to help with taking care of your health.

• The energies coming from the west will spur you on to fight to be the winner. Still, it might be wise to tame some of the aggressiveness by adding a small ornament in red.

• In the south-west the energies during 2017 can bring some gossip or harsh words. To soften this effect add an ornament in black and also a little something in red.

Feng Shui is one way you can get the year off to a great start. The easy general tips can be applied to all homes and offices. You’ll find other tips in other places online. Feng Shui is a lifetime study, and although you can start with some easy general tips, there’s a big difference between the easy tips and a full consultation specific for your home or office. A complete personalised consultation is a lot more detailed and complex, because you’re paying for a professional service. Flying stars is the professional standard of Feng Shui that uses both the compass direction and the age of your property to get placements for career success, wealth, loving relationships, health plus other good things in life. A top tip for you is to always ask a Feng Shui consultant if they’re going to use the flying stars before you hire them. If they’re not doing flying stars feng shui, they might be lovely people who are giving you general advice which you can get for free online.

Feng Shui is only one aspect of how you can make 2017 a brilliant year. There’s the astrological impact from your Four Pillars of Destiny, and there’s the decisions you make and the actions you take. You can create some of your own luck, and you can be far more effective if your home has been ‘feng-shui-ed’ by a flying stars professional.
